Chemical inputs in turf management

Turf and Ornamental Inputs Market – Overview

As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility, it can also be interpreted in a different manner when it comes to chemical inputs, with great potential comes greater risks. The modern agricultural industry finds a lot of applications for pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical additives. From fields too gardens, their applications are widespread. It is only recently that they have been started to be used in gardens. The vast increase in the number of lawns and landscapes have led to the application of chemical inputs in the same.  With the popularity of turfs and ornamental plants only increasing even further, the growth of the agrochemicals and chemical inputs sector is expected to follow suit.

The urban jungle as ecologists call it, consists of just concrete structure after structures with the occasional tree standing out as a lone ranger. With governments paying more attention to beautify our urban settings with parks, house lawns, stadiums and playgrounds, this situation is expected to change. With the implementation of all these ecological hotspots, comes the added problem of safeguarding them. Just like humans, insects and weeds will also be attracted to these hotspots among the concrete buildings. They are prone to infestation from viruses, bacteria, fungi, symbiotic plants and nematodes. The common diseases that can be brought about as a result of the same include chlorosis, leaf spotting, galls, cancers, root decay and so on. As a result, the application of good quality pesticides in such a manner as to protect the plants but not in any way affect the hundreds of humans living around it is an important challenge to be dealt with. The application of pesticides to golf courses and lawns are also an important topic that needs attention. Herbicides to tackle weed infestations and control of soil and microbial organisms are some other challenges to be dealt with.

The fundamental aim of fertilizers is to improve the soil quality so that the crops can grow better. The soil nutrient content gets enriched providing the plants with more nutrient availability and also balances the deficiency of plant mass. Nitrogen based, Potassium based and Potash based fertilizers are fulfilling the need for macronutrients in the soil. On the other hand, micronutrients such as magnesium, copper, zin, iron and boron are also essential for plant growth. The deficiency of any of these can lead to complications such as thinning, stunted growth and leaf reddening.

Plant growth regulators are also widely popular for application in landscape maintenance and in golf courses. In such large patches of grass such as golf courses, the manual trimming of every sector may not always be possible. In such cases plant growth regulators control the excess growth and keep the grass at the same level across the field. It functions by simply inhibiting the growth stage of a grass and prohibiting it from flowering or any other stage that is nonessential. By this way, PGRs help maintaining field and labour. While the labour and time is taken care of, the management cost gets reduced.

On the global scenario, the North America and European region consume the largest amount of agrochemicals in the turf and ornamental sector. The main consumers, country wise are US and Canada which boast high amounts of disposable incomes. The explanation for the increased demand is as simple as people having more money to spend on luxuries. While it is already established that turf and ornamental management is already a major part of developed countries, developing countries like Brazil, China and India are comparatively new to this segment. Fertilizer and pesticide consumption is expected to rise in the Asia Pacific region in the coming years. The increased demand and growth in Asia would be due to liberal regulatory environment coupled with awareness among consumers and landscape mangers.

Future prospects of the market include premium quality products, innovations and development of new products based on new principles and extensive research and development initiatives. The city authorities around the world are also becoming more focused on better landscaping. Sports complex managers are also becoming more efficient and competitive in providing better playing fields. After all, the purpose for establishing a turf or planting ornamentals varies and with that so does the application of the various chemical inputs.
