Alon USA Energy, Inc. is primarily engaged in refining and marketing of petroleum products operating mainly in the south central, southwestern, and western regions of the US. The company’s crude oil refineries are located in Texas, California, and Louisiana and have a combined throughput capacity of approximately 147,000 barrels per day (bpd). Its refineries produce petroleum products including various grades of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt, and other petroleum-based products.
Alon operates through three business segments: refining and marketing, retail, and asphalt.
The refining and marketing segment includes sour crude oil refineries located at Big Spring in Texas; light sweet crude oil refinery located at Krotz Springs in Louisiana; heavy crude oil refineries located at Paramount, Bakersfield, and Long Beach in California. These refineries have a combined throughput capacity of approximately 147,000 bpd. The California refineries have not processed crude oil since 2012 due to the high cost of crude oil relative to product yield and low asphalt demand. At these refineries, the company refines crude oil into petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, petrochemical feedstocks, asphalts, and other petroleum-based products, which are marketed primarily in the south central, southwestern, and western US.
The company’s Big Spring refinery has a crude oil throughput capacity of 73,000 bpd which is located on 1,306 acres in the Permian Basin in West Texas. It produces ultra-low sulfur gasoline, ultra-low sulfur diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and other petroleum-based products. It also produces certain other aromatics, propane, specialty solvents, propylene and benzene for use as petrochemical feedstocks, along with other by-products such as sulfur and carbon black oil.
The Paramount refinery is located on 63 acres in Paramount, California. The Long Beach refinery is located on 19 acres in Long Beach, California. The Bakersfield refinery is located on approximately 600 acres in Bakersfield, California. The California refineries have the capability to produce gasoline, distillates, vacuum gas oil and asphalt.
The company’s Krotz Springs refinery has a crude capacity of approximately 74,000 bpd. The Krotz Springs refinery produces gasoline, high sulfur diesel, light cycle oil, jet fuel, petrochemical feedstocks, LPG and slurry oil. It has the capability to process substantial volumes of low sulfur, or sweet, crude oil.
Alon’s retail segment is one of the largest 7-Eleven licensees in the US. Through its 7-Eleven licensing agreement, Alon has the exclusive right to operate 7-Eleven convenience stores in substantially all of its existing retail markets and many surrounding areas.
Alon markets gasoline and diesel fuel under the Alon brand name and provides brand support and payment services to distributors supplying over 633 locations, including all of its owned stores that sell motor fuel. In FY2015, approximately 56% of the gasoline and 23% of the diesel motor fuel produced at the Big Spring refinery was transferred to the company’s branded marketing business. Additionally, the company provide substantially all of its branded customers motor fuels, brand support and payment processing services in addition to the license of the Alon brand name and associated trade dress.
At the end of FY2015, the company operated 309 convenience store sites operating primarily in central and west Texas and New Mexico. Its convenience stores offer various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, food products, tobacco products, non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, and general merchandise as well as money orders to the public, primarily under the 7-Eleven and Alon brand names.
The company’s asphalt segment markets asphalt produced at its refineries. In FY2015, the company owned or operated 11 asphalt terminals located in Texas (Big Spring), Washington (Richmond Beach), California (Paramount, Long Beach, Elk Grove, Bakersfield, and Mojave), and Arizona (Phoenix and Flagstaff) as well as through a 50% interest in Fernley, Nevada and Brownwood, Texas. The company purchases non-blended asphalt from third parties in addition to non-blended asphalt produced at the Big Spring refinery. It markets asphalt through its terminals as blended and non-blended asphalt.
