Groupama S.A. is one of the largest insurance groups in Europe and the foremost mutual insurance company in France. At the national level, Groupama is organized around three entities: the Federation Nationale Groupama, Groupama S.A. and Groupama Holding. The Federation Nationale Groupama is made up of the regional mutual banks. It represents members, defines and monitors the group’s overall strategy, and ensures the continued application of mutual insurance principles. Groupama is responsible for the general operational activities of the group, and for the reinsurance of regional mutual banks and subsidiaries. Groupama Holding is wholly owned by the regional mutual banks and holds the shares of the group.
Groupama is a French societe anonyme nearly wholly owned, directly or indirectly, by the Caisses Regionales d’Assurances et de Reassurances Mutuelles Agricoles and the Caisses Specialisees regional mutuals, which form the mutual insurance division of Groupama. Groupama is 99.97% owned by the regional mutual through Groupama Holding and Groupama Holding 2. The remaining portion of its share capital (0.03%) is held by former and current agents and employees of Groupama. Both Groupama Holding and Groupama Holding 2, which are French societes anonymes, are wholly owned by the regional mutual. Groupama’s business activities are organized into three business segments: Insurance in France; Insurance Abroad; and Banking and Financial Businesses. The activities of each of these segments include: L and H (Life and Health) Insurance, P and C (Property and Casualty) Insurance, Banking and Finance, and Holding Company Activity. The Property and Casualty Insurance segment cover all the group’s other insurance activities.
In FY2016, the Property And Casualty Insurance segment reported revenues of E7,114.0 million, which accounted for 53.1% of the company’s total revenue. The Life and Health Insurance segment covers the traditional life insurance business as well as personal injury (largely health risks, disability and long-term care).
In FY2016, the Life And Health Insurance segment reported revenues of E6,291.0 million, which accounted for 46.9% of the company’s total revenue. The Banking and Finance segment relates to distribution of banking products, including fund management activities, real estate management, private equity and employee savings. The Holding Company Activity includes income and expenses arising from managing the group and holding the shares of the companies included in the Groupama scope of consolidation.
Geographically, the company classifies its operations into two segments, namely France, and International. In FY2016, France segment accounted for 81.2% of the company’s total revenues, and followed by International with 18.8%.
