Kao is a Japan-based manufacturer of consumer products, including personal care, fabric and home care products, and chemicals. The company operates in Asia and Oceania, Europe and Africa, and the Americas. The company operates through four business segments: Beauty Care, Fabric and Home Care, Human Health Care and Chemical. The Beauty Care segment offers a range of cosmetic products, skin and body care products such as facial and body cleansers, hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners, and hair styling agents.

It also offers hair coloring, permanent wave and styling agents to hair salons. The company markets its beauty care products under the Sofina, Kanebo, Molton Brown, Biore, Jergens, John Frieda, Goldwell and KMS brand names, among others. In FY2016, the Beauty Care segment reported revenue of JPY601,620 million, which accounted for 41.3% of the company’s total revenue. The Fabric and Home Care segment manufactures and sells fabric care products such as laundry detergents, fabric softeners and bleaching agents, and home care products such as dishwashing detergents and house cleaning products.

The company markets its detergents under the Attack, Family and CuCute brand names, fabric softeners under Humming brand, bleaching agents under Haiter brand and household cleaning products under Magiclean and Quickle brand names. In FY2016, the Fabric and Home Care segment reported revenue of JPY345,163 million, which accounted for 23.7% of the company’s total revenue. The Human Health Care segment offers health beverages, sanitary napkins and baby diapers. The segment also provides personal health products such as bath additives and oral care products.

Kao markets its sanitary napkins under Laurier brand and baby diapers under Merries brand name. It also offers Pyuora and Clear Clean range of oral hygiene products and Bub line of bath additives. In FY2016, the Human Health Care segment reported revenue of JPY273,067 million, which accounted for 18.7% of the company’s total revenue. The Chemical segment offers products in four categories: oleo chemicals, performance chemicals, surfactants and specialty chemicals.

Under the oleo chemicals category, it offers fatty alcohols, fatty amines, fatty acids, fatty amides, glycerin, commercial-use edible fats and oils and esters. Under the performance chemicals category, Kao offers a super plasticizer for concrete under the Mighty brand. It markets its surfactants under EMAL brand name. Specialty chemicals offerings include toner and toner binder for copiers and printers, ink and colorants for inkjet printers, fragrances and aroma chemicals. The company markets specialty chemicals under Tuftone brand name. In FY2016, the Chemical segment reported revenue of JPY237,760 million, which accounted for 16.3% of the company’s total revenue. Geographically, the company classifies its operations into four segments, namely Japan, Asia, the Americas and Europe. In FY2016, Japan segment accounted for 66.2% of the company’s total revenues; followed by Asia with 17.2%; the Americas with 8.3%; and Europe with 8.3%.
